It’s not too late to celebrate!  Ice cream is good 365 days a year :) In 1984, President Ronald Reagan officially declared July as National Ice Cream Month so in honor of the popular dessert that’s guaranteed to lift you up and cool you down on even the hottest summer day ….  I have an easy recipe that doesn’t require fancy equipment or an ice cream maker!  Your kids will love you and the ice cream happens to be delish!!

We are celebrating by making soft vanilla ice cream that doesn’t require any fancy equipment or ingredient list.  It’s a great summer activity for the kids and the ingredients truly make a great tasting dessert!

What’s YOUR flavor??

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream in a Bag :)

Ingredients:

  • Ice cubes (enough to fill each gallon-size bag about half full)
  • 1 cup half and half
  • 1/2 cup salt (The bigger the granules, the better. Kosher or rock salt works best, but table salt is fine.)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pint-size ziplock bag
  • 1 gallon-size ziplock bag
  • Your favorite mixins such as chocolate chips, cereal pieces, or fresh fruit.

Method:

-Combine the sugar, half and half, and vanilla extract in the pint-size bag and seal it tightly.
-Place the salt and ice in the gallon-size bag, then place the sealed smaller bag inside as well. Seal the larger bag. Now shake the bags until the mixture hardens (about 5 minutes). Feel the small bag to determine when it’s done.  (You can put them in the freezer if you don’t want to use the ice method. Just take it out of the freezer and squish the bag with your hands and the warmth of your hands will mix/churn to soften your ice cream.)

-Take the smaller bag out of the larger one, add mix-ins, and eat the ice cream right out of the bag. Easy cleanup too!
