New in theaters this week we have “Edge of Tomorrow,” starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

Aliens called Mimiks are attempting to take over the world when Tom Cruise’s US Army Major William Cage shows up on the battlefield. He encounters super-warrior Emily Blunt and then through a freak accident, finds himself reliving the same battle day after day. Major Cage fights the aliens until the moment he dies, only to wake up exactly where he started.

Look, I’m not going to lie and say I fully understand the circumstances that lead to Cage repeating the same battle. I had friends explain it to me after the movie & I was STILL scratching my head. “Edge of Tomorrow” is so wild and fun though, I didn’t really mind the confusion. It’s like “Groundhog Day” meets “War of the Worlds” with a little “Saving Private Ryan” thrown in. That sounds intense and it IS at times but “Edge of Tomorrow” rarely takes itself too seriously. Lots of fun is had with the stereotypical war-movie characters and with Major Cage’s peculiar time-warp. Tom Cruise gets to play the action hero we know so well but he also gets to work a refreshing dry wit. He also LOOKS so great that the 20 year age difference between he and Emily Blunt seems nonexistent.

“Edge of Tomorrow” bounces from questionable to totally implausible throughout but it’s such a fantastic ride that I still have to give it a B+. I also encourage you to see it in 3D or even IMAX 3D to get the full-rollercoaster-ride affect. No lie, I screamed out loud in the theater more than once!
