Julie’s Review Room: ‘Maleficent’
New in theaters this week we have “Maleficent,” starring Angelina Jolie as the spiteful fairy who curses Sleeping Beauty.
This is an interesting retelling of what is probably the most BORING Disney story ever. It’s about the beautiful Aurora who is cursed at birth and then dances around a forest until a guy on a horse saves her life. The only interesting thing about the original has to be the angry woman who damns Aurora to an early pseudo-death. This version of the story focuses on Maleficent and how she USED to be a happy person. It also shows us what caused her eventual downward spiral and believe me, it’s FAR more interesting than the original.
“Maleficent” gets a little carried away with the fairyland creatures of the Moors and it would’ve been nice if Aurora herself had more dimension. This movie resonates with me though as a woman who HATES the traditional idea of fairy tales where a prince has to ride in & save the day. The MOM side of me was also appreciates the unexpected relationship that develops between Aurora and Maleficent. My favorite part of this movie has to be its star Angelina Jolie, who so perfectly embodies the idea of beautiful and terrible. I’m not always a fan of her work but Jolie made me love this character so I’m giving “Maleficent” a B. Plus, muumuus and devil horns are a tough look to pull off but she REALLY makes it work.
