Julie’s Review Room: Neighbors
New in theaters this week we have “Neighbors,” starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. Rogen plays Mac, who just purchased his dream home and moved in with his family. Efron plays Teddy, the President of the fraternity that moves in next DOOR.
These guys try to be friends but the constant loud parties soon lead Mac to take drastic measures. He & his wife, played by an adorable Rose Byrne who finally gets to use her Australian accent, try to infiltrate the fraternity and force them to move.
“Neighbors” will appeal to anyone who has ever been in a fraternity but it will also speak to those of us who’ve had a baby and then struggled with the transition from wild-child to responsible adulthood. Mac & Kelly want the fraternity to clean up their act, but they also enjoy the easy access to all-night parties.
The same people who were behind movies like “Five Year Engagement” and “Get Him to the Greek” are involved here so YOU KNOW you’re getting raunchy humor. What “Neighbors lacks in actual jokes it makes up for with shocking sight gags. In fact, there are some breast-feeding jokes that kind of crossed the line for me, and I LIKE breastfeeding jokes! I really expected it to be funnier with SO MANY fun actors involved, like Ike Barinholtz and Dave Franco, but I might have been suffering from too high expectations. I still laughed like crazy & that’s why I’m giving “Neighbors” a B-. Just seriously, prepare yourself for lowbrow humor and LOADS of Seth Rogan nudity.
