Interview: The Chainsmokers Let You Take A #Selfie
By Courtney E. Smith
The guys behind the hit song “#Selfie” are two of the most self-aware, ironic minds in the EDM business. The Chainsmokers have created the modern day equivalent of Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back,” Valley Girl accent and all. But “#Selfie,” as earwiggy as it may be, is only the tip of their production iceberg.
“We made the beat, and had that sitting around, and then had the idea to have a track where some chick said, ‘Let me take a selfie,” said Andrew Taggart. Add some lyrics, and that is the true origin tale of 2014’s most viral song so far. And it only took them about half an hour to put together.
Radio.com sat down with the guys in our studio to talk about why “#Selfie” is possibly the worst song in the world to have sex to, why they won’t get into their own head about their success, why their remix tastes run towards indie rock and why it’s unlikely there’s going to be another “#Selfie.”
