Julie’s Review Room: Mr. Peabody & Sherman
Spring Break is coming up for lots of kids so it’s the perfect time for this week’s movie “Mr. Peabody & Sherman.” It’s about the world’s smartest dog who adopts a boy and teaches him history using a time machine.
Ty Burrell, who plays Phil Dunphy on “Modern Family,” voices Mr. Peabody and he brings that same goofy warmth to the character. I didn’t think I could get emotionally attached to a brainiac dog, but it happened. The time traveling segments will go over the heads of most kids and they might not even recognize some of the historical figures Peabody & Sherman run across. I know my own girls had a million questions after the movie but they still LOVED it. I was pretty surprised by how much I enjoyed it too. Yes, the humor is infantile and the science over the top, but there’s a sweetness beneath it all that pulled me in so I’m giving “Mr. Peabody & Sherman,” a B.
If you don’t have little kids to entertain over Spring Break, there are some GREAT new releases on DVD. First is “12 Years a Slave,” which just scored an Oscar for Best Picture. It’s packed with wonderful acting and important history, so don’t miss it OR you could see “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” which is also out now. Great movie, far better than the first & don’t forget the next one “Mockingjay” will be out just before Thanksgiving this year.
