Julie’s Review Room: Pompeii
New in theaters this week, we have “Pompeii,” starring Kit Harrington as a slave turned Gladiator who must rescue his true love before Mount Vesuvius erupts.
Those of us who love Kit as “John Snow” on “Game of Thrones” will not be disappointed because he’s essentially playing the same character here, just without a shirt. The sets and extras seem to have come directly from “Game of Thrones”…heck, even the music sounds the same. “Pompeii” borrows much more though from the movie “Gladiator,” which isn’t necessarily a BAD thing. You could do worse than watching muscly men fight in an arena while a volcano rages in the background. “Pompeii” has far less depth then “Gladiator” though, of emotion and apparently budget. The dialogue also gets pretty clunky at times but I still enjoyed it much more than I expected. I’ve been fascinated by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius since I was a kid so watching it go off onscreen is pretty amazing. That’s the main reason I’m giving “Pompeii” a B-.
Also, those of you who missed the Best Picture nominees this year are in luck because AMC Theaters are starting their Best Picture Marathon this weekend. You can see Philomena, Wolf of Wall Street, Dallas Buyers Club & 12 Years a Slave in a row this Saturday and then NEXT Saturday they’re showing the REST of the Best Picture nominees. It only costs $30 this weekend too so if you want to check it out go to amctheatres.com.
