She Mail: Mother Concerned About Teen Daughter’s Calorie Counting Club
Julie Fisk is here to help. If you’ve need advice or want us to hash out a problem on the air for you, let Julie share some of her wisdom.
I have a 15 year old daughter & I was looking through the text messages on her phone the other day (yes, I was snooping). There wasn’t really anything all that interesting but then I noticed that she has been texting with 3 of her friends about their calorie intake for the day. Then whoever consumed the least amount of calories texts I WIN to the other girls. I’m worried about this and wondering what other mothers would do if they saw this in their daughter’s phone. This really concerns me. Should I talk to my daughter? Or call the other mothers?
Dear Mama Snoopy,
I don’t think you should sound the alarm JUST YET. People who suffer from eating disorders are masters of disguising it. If you alert your daughter and the other families, they might continue the contest but hide it. You should start to watch these girls closely though and do some homework about eating-disorders. If you notice weight loss, sudden changes in eating habits, or a marked increase in exercise habits then it might be time to step in. I would stay vigilant but quiet for now and also do my best to be a good influence for my daughter. Offer lots of healthy options at home and keep the negative things you might think about your OWN body to yourself. As parents, we still have a big influence on our children so make sure it’s the positive kind. Hope that helps & please keep us posted!
