Julie’s Review Room: ‘Free Birds’
New in theaters this week we’ve got a movie about the approaching Thanksgiving holiday called “Freebirds,” starring Owen Wilson and Amy Poehler.
“Free Birds” is about 2 turkeys who go back in time to stop the pilgrims from eating turkey for Thanksgiving and thus saving future turkeys. Owen Wilson plays Reggie, who is pardoned by the President and then brought home to be his little girl’s house pet, for some strange reason. It gets even weirder when Reggie is whisked away by another turkey, played by Woody Harrelson, to search for a time machine. They head back in time & meet up with a flock of wild turkeys who, oddly act like & resemble American Indians.
Not all of the parts fall into place in “Free Birds” and it never lives up to the creative premise. It’s also not as funny as I hoped it would be. My 9-year-old summed it up when she said, “People laughed a lot but other times they were supposed to be laughing and they WEREN’T.” “Free Birds” is saved though by talented voice actors like Amy Poehler and George Takei. There is enough fun to keep it afloat so I’m giving “Free Birds” a C+, but my kids are giving it an A minus.
By the way, I want to send out props to Reel FX, the local production company that MADE “Free Birds.” It was their first feature film and they did a great job with it. Hollywood bigwigs came to town last weekend for the Free Birds premiere and sang the praises of Texas, primarily the low cost and wealth of talent so GOOD JOB REEL FX! Keep bringing that work to North TX!
