She Mail: Parents Disagree Over Letting 4-Year-Old Son Dress As Katy Perry
Julie Fisk is here to help. If you’ve need advice or want us to hash out a problem on the air for you, let Julie share some of her wisdom.
We’ve got a dilemma in our house because our four-year-old son wants to be Katy Perry for Halloween. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal because he obviously isn’t old enough to understand the significance of dressing like a girl, but my husband is freaking out. We haven’t flat-out said NO yet, but Halloween’s pretty close now & we can’t keep ignoring it.
So how do I handle this? I feel pretty bad about telling my little guy NO because he hasn’t mentioned dressing as anything else, but I don’t know if his Dad can handle seeing his boy in a dress.
We’ll be listening for your suggestions.
Dude Looks Like a Katy
Dear Dude Looks Like a Katy,
First and foremost, if your husband is worried because he thinks that this Halloween costume is an indicator, he should relax. Your son is too young to fully understand the difference between gender roles so his desire to wear a Katy Perry costume does not mean a thing. Tony felt that you should support your son and let him dress however he wants but John was a bit more conflicted. He thinks you should support your son, but also tell him he might be taunted by the other kids. A caller suggested that he dress as Katy Perry’s #1 Fan, which I thought was a great idea. I think it’s important to give your son some options. Maybe he could dress as Ziggy Stardust or someone from Kiss. That way he could dress like a pop-star without being ridiculed. If he still insists on dressing as Katy Perry, then let him. Tell Dad to relax and if you have any friends who might be a jerk about it, just don’t take them Trick or Treating with you!
