Halloween is right around the corner. It’s time to start thinking about costumes and Trick-Or-Treating. One thing that Julie is starting to notice is how costumes for girls jump from cute to sexy for certain age groups. What?!

For kids under 9 or 10 years old, it’s easy to find nice and modest character costumes that parents feel comfortable in letting their children roam the neighborhood wearing. However, as children grow towards their teen years, the costumes for girls begin getting kinda skimpy. For example, take a look at what Party City has available for girls and teens.

What message does this send our daughters? How young are our children being trained by advertising that their only value is in how much skin they show?

Take heart, parents. There are plenty of characters that your kids can dress as and still have modest costumes. It might take some research and perhaps some DIY craftworking, but it’s better to let your kids roam the neighborhood in full length Game of Thrones gowns than in the short, skimpy skirts of Monster High characters and “sexy” witches.
