Texas Man’s “Auto-Brewery Syndrome” Makes Beer In His Belly

If there was any disease you could ever want to have, it might be auto-brewery syndrome. A Texas man with this condition was found to have an excess of brewer’s yeast in his stomach. Whenever he eats starchy foods, his stomach makes beer.

The 61-year-old man took himself to the emergency room with complaints of feeling dizzy after eating a meal. When the doctors checked his blood alcohol content and found that it was 0.37 without having had a drink all day. After keeping him on a controlled diet and no alcohol at all, the doctors learned that his blood alcohol content still rose to a 0.12.

According to MSN Now, the doctors diagnosed the man with a super rare condition called “auto-brewery syndrome.” The yeast in his system was fermenting the sugars from his diet and making alcohol.
