It’s the little decisions that send you down a completely different road in your life. Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s COO, was supposed to be on Asiana Flight 214 with her family and colleagues. A decision to use her United miles instead for her family’s tickets put the family and colleagues on a flight that landed 20 minutes earlier.

She posted to her Facebook the following message:

“Taking a minute to be thankful and explain what happened. My family, colleagues Debbie Frost, Charlton Gholson and Kelly Hoffman and I were originally going to take the Asiana flight that just crash-landed. We switched to United so we could use miles for my family’s tickets. Our flight was scheduled to come in at the same time, but we were early and landed about 20 minutes before the crash. Our friend Dave David Eun was on the Asiana flight and he is fine.

Thank you to everyone who is reaching out – and sorry if we worried anyone.

Serious moment to give thanks.”

Sandberg mentions friend David Eun, a vice president for Samsung Mobile, who was on the ill-fated Asiana flight. He tweeted a photo moments after evacuating from the plane.

All of this made us think about the close calls we’ve had and the what-ifs.

Julie lives in fear of what-ifs. When she was 4-years-old, she was playing outside in the backyard beneath a big tree. Her mom was calling her to come inside as a big storm was approaching. Just as Julie finally walked inside the house, there was a flash and huge boom. Lightning had struck the tree and caused it to explode. Her mother passed out when she thought Julie was still under the tree.

Tony learned to ride a bike without training wheels at an early age. As a 5-year-old, he would ride his bike around the parking lot of a nearby high school. One day, his mom wouldn’t let him go ride like he usually did. That same day, two girls were abducted from the high school parking lot. They were later rescued.
