If you are looking to purchase a new iPad you might want to start opening your new toy before you leave the store. A rash of fake iPads have been leaving stores around the country packaged completely in the official iPad packaging.
CNN is reporting that Suzanne Nassise went to purchase the $499 tablet from her local Walmart in Brockton, Massachusetts and left with a plastic fake that had painted on speakers. It took her trying to turn it on to realize she had been duped.
She told WCVB, “‘Wow, it’s a little on the light side — Apple’s an elegant product.’” But when the product wouldn’t turn on she realized it wasn’t truly Apple’s product. “When I realized it, I was upset,” she told WCVB. “I just paid $500 for a paperweight.”
This isn’t the first time this has happened. Since the first iPads came out in 2010 multiple cases of fake iPads being bought at legitimate retailers have sprung up. Sometimes retailers will not exchange the product thinking that it is a scam. But the retailers also think that is how the fake iPads get into the stores also. People buy the real iPad, replace it with a replica and return everything still packaged.
