Red wine is fantastic. The fact that it helps you get a better handle on your health is just a very big bonus. A much bigger bonus than Clark Griswald ever received. So here are five ways that red wine benefits you health wise.
1. Keeps You Trim
Researchers say that Piceatannol, the chemical compound that our bodies convert from resveratrol (the main health helper in red wine), binds to insulin receptors of fat cells and block the pathways for those cells to mature and grow, thus keeping you slimmer.
2. Fights Off Colds
The antioxidants in red wine can help you stay away from the tissues. A study in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that members of five Spanish Universities who drank more than 14 weekly glasses of wine were 40% less likely to contract a common cold. Good enough for us.
3. Protect Your Heart
Polyphenols, the antioxidants in red wine, can help keep blood vessels flexible and lower the possibility of clotting.
4. Lower Cholesterol
A huge problem in America is high cholesterol. A study out of Spain showed that people who consumed the same grape supplement found in red wine saw tehir levels of bad cholesterol lower by 9% among people with already normal cholesterol levels. People with high levels saw a 12% decrease.
5. Increase Memory
Resveratrol has been linked to keeping memory sharp. The compound can slow down the formation of beta-amyloid protein, a key part of the plaque that is found on the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.
As if we needed more reasons to have a glass of red at the end of the night, this certainly doesn’t hurt our case.
