A new study out from the U.S. National Institute on Child Heath and Human Development says that a person’s temperament in childhood and the type of parenting they received is a major factor in their political beliefs when they grow up.

Part of the study talked to more than 700 children and their parents about the way they are raised. It found that authoritarian parents were more likely to have children with conservative political views while egalitarian parents children leaned more toward liberal views.

With temperament the study found that fearful children around four or five years of age became conservative thinking 18-year-olds. Focused and active younger children turned out more liberal by 18.
