Disney Purchases LucasFilm And Vows New Star Wars Movie In 2015
It’s as if the voices of a million geeks cried out in delight all once. Yesterday, news broke that Disney had bought George Lucas’ privately-owned LucasFilm for $4.05 billion in cash and stocks.
LucasFilm is the 8ft tall Wookie that holds the rights to not only the Star Wars franchise but Indiana Jones and special effects house Industrial Light & Magic. Disney’s purchase wasn’t the only news that had Jedis and Jawas freaking out across the galaxy.
When George Lucas conceived the Star Wars saga, he wrote 9 episodes. So far, only the first 6 have been released. The original trilogy released in the late 70s and early 80s included the 4th through 6th episodes, and the prequels released in 1999, 2002, and 2005 featured the first 3 episodes. With Disney at the center of the Star Wars empire, a promise of Star Wars Episode VII in 2015 has many rejoicing.
