“Alex Cross” stars Tyler Perry as a homicide detective & psychologist who tracks down a serial killer.
Sometimes I see a movie that’s so bad, I’d rather sit here & make uncomfortable groaning sounds instead of review it, but this is a Tyler Perry movie based on a James Patterson character. People will actually see this one so I’d better let you know what you’re getting into.
Tyler Perry breaks out of his Madea mode and takes over as Alex Cross, originally played by Morgan Freeman. Perry does his best to imitate Freeman’s quiet & deliberate delivery, but he’s just not a strong enough presence. In fact, “Alex Cross” is riddled with miscasting. Matthew Fox plays the serial killer and even though he lost a ton of weight & really works his CRAZY EYES, he’s still Dr. Jack from “Lost” to me. John C. McGinley from “Scrubs” plays the angry police chief and even though he’s not supposed to be funny, the audience laughed every time he hit the screen.
Tyler Perry seems the most out of place playing Detective Alex Cross. It IS fun to see him try a totally different role, but Perry just doesn’t have the range or depth of emotion required for this character. Add to this a flat-out STUPID storyline and you’ll see why I’m giving “Alex Cross” an F.
One more thing. “Alex Cross” has some of the most blatant and grotesque product placement I’ve ever seen. I respect that product placement is a necessary evil which helps movies get made, but it’s completely out-of-control in this case. It might also explain my sudden desire to buy a Cadillac RIGHT NOW.
