Rosie O’Donnell revealed on her blog yesterday that she suffered a heart attack last week. The 50-year old TV personality is recovering at home and owing her life to a TV commercial.
In her blog, O’Donnell says that she started experiencing symptoms after helping an “enormous woman” out of a car. Within a few hours, she says that “my body hurt. I had an ache in my chest both my arms were sore, everything felt bruised.”
Rather than call 911, Rosie researched her symptoms online and took some Bayer aspirin as she had seen in a commercial. She says, “Thank god. Saved by a TV commercial. Literally.”
She visited a cardiologist the next day who discovered that one of her arteries was 99% blocked. The doctor told Rosie she had suffered a heart attack commonly known as “The Widowmaker.” She underwent surgery to open the artery with a stent.
Rosie adds, “I am lucky to be here. Know the symptoms ladies, listen to the voice inside. The one we all so easily ignore. CALL 911.”
The symptoms of a heart attack can be very different for women than they are for men. Chest pains, shortness of breath, and pain radiating down the left arm are typical heart attack symptoms for men. According to WebMD, women can experience these same symptoms, but they can also have unusual fatigue, weakness, nausea, dizziness, discomfort that feels like indigestion, and back pain.
Take Rosie’s advice. If you think you’ve having a heart attack, call 911.
