If you’ve ever heard that everything you see on TV has to be real, you probably knew that wasn’t true. Well when you see things on Animal Planet and Discovery Channel the assumption is that they are telling truths about what they know best.

This weekend when Animal Planet got 2 million viewers for a fake documentary “Mermaids: The Body Found” many of those viewers thought they were seeing actual evidence of mermaids.

The use of CGI for actual mermaid video as well as “found” footage of a washed up mermaid as well as fake news broadcasts and fake expert interviews helped tell the believable story. Animal Planet even ran a disclaimer saying the special was a work of science fiction.

Despite the disclaimer the Animal Planet and You Tube message boards are awash with people believing the documentary was in fact pure fact.

Here is the “Found” video that aired as part of the special.
