The Uni K Waxing salon, locations in Florida and New York, is having a month long promotion for the month of July. It offers half off waxing, as long as you are not able to legally drive a car.
The promotional ad states: “During the month of July girls 15 and under can enjoy their first waxing experience and find it NATURAL, SAFE and PLEASANT.”
The New York Times broached the issue of waxing teens and pre-teens recently. Some salons defended the right for the youngsters to wax unwanted hair. But most stuck to referencing upper lip or eyebrows.
The add from Uni K Wax does not limit the areas the deal is good for. It says, “ALL WAXING SERVICES, ALL GIRLS 15 AND YOUNGER, ALL JULY.” This appears right under the huge “50% off” graphic.
When Hillary Reinsberg of BuzzFeed contacted the corporate offices of Uni K Wax she got an interesting answer on to why this promotion was put into place.
Carlos Calderon, the company’s Director of Operations told Reinsberg the idea came on because “girls get bored when they go out with their moms to do errands.”
“At our centers, the daughters often come along and look at their mothers getting waxed and they have questions and they’re not part of the fun and it just becomes a regular activity,” he said. “It’s just another thing you have to do with Mom, like running errands or something else that becomes boring.”
The promotion does require a consenting parent present at all appointments, but there is no issue from the salon in having any of the waxes offered by the establishment preformed on the girls. That includes bikini waxing.
Calderon also told BuzzFeed that waxing is “a process in life” that the salon looks to make “fun” for the girls.
The company has put the promotion in the month of July to tie it in with the independence theme July normally takes.
“We want them to celebrate freedom and independence all July when they go out with their Moms and experience this waxing treatment,” Calderon said. “It goes along with our country.”
