California Fair Crowns World’s Ugliest Dog
They have faces that only a mother could love, but these ugly dogs are cute in their own way. Dog owners from around the world descended on Petaluma, CA, 40 miles north of San Francisco, to enter their dogs in the World’s Ugliest Dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair.
Unfortunate-faced mutts were put on display by their proud owners to be judge by organizers for their “natural ugliness in both pedigree and mutt classes.” This is one contest were wrinkles, bad teeth, and googly-eyes are good features to have.
This year’s winner was a Chinese crested from the UK aptly named Mugly. Mugly appeared to be nonchalant about his win, but his owner, Bev Nicholson, was nonplussed.
“I couldn’t speak when they announced Mugly’s name. I didn’t know which way to look. I was shaking as much as the dog,” said Nicholson.
Mugly’s winnings include $1,000, a year’s worth of dog cookies, and the bragging rights to beating 28 other ugly dogs from around the world.
