Screening Of Universal Pictures' "Snow White And The Huntsman"

It’s a double feature weekend from our Queen of the Silver Screen, Julie Fisk, saw two movies she would like to share with you this week.

Snow White & The Huntsman

This week we’ll look at 2 movies that suffer from a similar problem. The first is “Snow White and the Huntsmen” starring Kristen Stewart as the infamous princess.

This version of Snow White bears little resemblance to the Disney version, taking the dark Brothers Grimm route. It results in some great things, like a Snow White who resembles Joan of Arc and a fantastic fairytale land that looks a little like Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth. There is some truly beautiful imagery happening here, especially around Charlize Theron’s wicked stepmother. The problem is that there are too many storylines for any of them to hit home. It’s all flash and no real substance and that’s why “Snow White and the Huntsman” is getting a C.

Moonrise Kingdom

Also out in North Texas this weekend is “Moonrise Kingdom,” the latest from director Wes Anderson. It centers on 2 lonely 12-year-olds who fall in love & run away together.

Anderson revisits some of his favorite themes here, namely the innocence or lack-thereof in kids & how they’re capable of great acts of bravery and love. These messages get lost in the novelty of the setting, though. Great pains are taken to make this movie feel like someone’s beautiful memories & it works, but it also overpowers the story. Wes Anderson fans will be happy just see his work again and since I AM a fan, I’m giving “Moonrise Kingdom” a B+, with a condition. I was uncomfortable with the intimacy between these kids. There’s one underwear scene in particular that really gave me heebie-jeebies. I don’t know if it’s because I’m a mother or if there’s a genuine ICK-factor here. You’ll have to decide for yourself but really…ew.
