NBC's "The Sing Off" Live Finale - Arrivals

With the seasons winding down on TV and the networks trying to figure out what they’ll be airing both this summer and fall some shows were bound to get cut. And it would seem that the Nick Lachey hosted Sara Bareilles judged “The Sing Off” is getting the boot from NBC.

Bareilles who joined the show just this past season (the a cappella singing competitions third on NBC) will not be joining co-judges Ben Folds (Ben Folds Five) and Shawn Stockman (Boys II Men) this summer for season four.

The shows ratings were not great (about a 4 share) but for NBC that is on par with almost all of their shows right now. Only the Voice seems to put up large numbers (11 share for the season finale).

Maybe the network only wanted one singing competition to focus on.

The thing that was nice about the Sign Off what the range of talent on the stage. From 60 year-olds in a barber shop quartet to kids in a high school or college choir groups, every person on stage could sing, no instruments needed. Plus the judges knew music and a capella (more than some of these other singing shows we think)

Not that the judges and host (Lachey) won’t be able to keep busy. Bareilles has a new EP coming out and Folds got back with his band-mates and is getting ready to release a new “Ben Folds Five” record. Lachey is preparing too, but in a different way, his wife Vanessa Minnillo are expecting their first baby.

The cancellation of the show takes a hit for a local Arlington a capella group who won the final season of the show. Pentatonix won “The Sing Off” last year with their amazing arrangements of songs and really were doing things no one in the a capella circles were seeing will try to make their impact without the standard “re-appearance” on the upcoming season.

Not that we see that as a problem. Check out their version of Gotye’s “Somebody I Used To Know”. We’re sad this show is going away, but we’re sure a capella will never die.
