Lite’s Review Room: “Dark Shadows
This weekend Johnny Depp has a new moving coming out. Yeah we’re in already, but what did our Queen of the Silver Screen Julie Fisk think of the new flick?
“Dark Shadows” stars Johnny Depp as a vampire who’s entombed for 200 years but arises in 1972 to find his family estate in ruins. It is based on the TV show of the same name that aired from the late 1960’s into the early ’70’s. Tim Burton directs and he brings along his usual cast of characters, including Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and he even has Danny Elfman working the score again.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work in his favor this time. Everyone, actors and the director included, appears to be going through the motions of making a movie without feeling any actual passion or excitement about it. Also, “Dark Shadows” wants to be a funny-scary movie, and it succeeds in one regard. Watching Johnny Depp’s vampire, Barnabas Collins adjust to life in the ’70’s is great, but when the movie decides to REALLY scare us, it falls short, especially during the incredibly flat finale.
I’m afraid I have to give “Dark Shadows” a C+ and can only recommend it to people who were either HUGE fans of the original series or people who love ANYTHING that Tim Burton & Johnny Depp do together.
I also have a suggestion for Tim Burton & Johnny Depp: Guys, it’s time to see other people. It doesn’t HAVE to be a divorce, maybe just a trial separation, but you both need to get some space.
You guys used to be the cool couple to hang out with at the party. Now you just sit at the table & tell the same stories over and over again. It’s like hanging out with Mom and Dad, without the benefit of a free meal.
