If you haven’t seen The Hunger Games yet, you may be the only one. It made $155 million in the U.S. this weekend and $214 million globally over the weekend.

That puts it third behind last years final Harry Potter film and 2008 The Dark Knight.

The movie’s success brings the first blockbuster franchise to Lions Gate, a small Hollywood studio previously best known for Saw and the Tyler Perry films.

The Hunger Gamesset a record for the biggest opening from a non-sequel film, and the largest debut outside the summer blockbuster season.

Phil Contrino, editor of Boxoffice.com, told Reuters, “The first movie in a franchise, to post a number like this, is really insane. There is no other word for it.”

He continued, “Harry Potter had seven movies before it got to that point, and Dark Knight had years and years of building the Batman brand. This movie comes and hangs with them in the same league.”

The final Harry Potter opened at $169.2 million, andDark Knightopened at $158.4 million.

David Spitz, executive vice president of domestic distribution for Lions Gate, said on Sunday. “To launch a franchise like this is incredible. It’s above and beyond our expectations…We’re just going to enjoy the ride.”
