Premiere Of Columbia Pictures' "21 Jump Street" - Red Carpet

We know this weekend is going to be filled with corned beef and cabbage and jolly ‘o a goo tym, but if you need a break from shamrocking head to the movies.  There are 2 very interesting new pictures hitting theaters this week.

Julie Fisk, our Queen of the Silver Screen and member of the DFW Film Critics Association, saw the reprisal of one of our favorite shows (Yes, we know we watched because of Johnny Depp as well).

21 Jump Street -

“21 Jump Street” stars Jonah Hill & Channing Tatum as 2 incompetent police officers who are sent back to high school as narcotics agents.

You’ve got to feel kind of bad for ANY movie that’s coming out right now, a mere week before one of the most anticipated films of the year. Yes, I’m talking about the Hunger Games and no, no one I’ve spoken to has expressed any interest what-so-ever in seeing a big screen remake of an old Johnny Depp show, but don’t be too quick to dismiss “21 Jump Street.”

This movie has a couple of things working in its favor. First of all, Jonah Hill co-wrote it and he doesn’t bother keeping too close to the original series. They’ve brought in many of the original “Jump Street” players, including a hilarious cameo by Johnny Depp, but any tip of the hat ends there. Jonah Hill is more interested in turning this “21 Jump Street” into a goofball buddy-comedy. Plus, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, who are also Executive Producers, are having so much FUN together. Tatum certainly isn’t known for physical comedy, but he takes to it like an old pro.

In fact, I thought he was even funnier to watch than Jonah Hill. “21 Jump Street” certainly benefits from low-expectations, but I still have to give it a B+ for being surprisingly good and for making me laugh till I had a coughing fit. Apologies to those sitting near me.

And for those of you who are holding onto you popcorn money for The Hunger Games next week, I am seeing it on Monday and I’ll tell you what I think of it as soon as I can.
