While it’s become a day to celebrate everything Irish, green, and gold, it’s actually a day to remember Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick was kidnapped by the Irish and lived as a slave for a number of years before returning to Britain. There he went joined a Catholic monastery. He later returned to Ireland as a Christian missionary. He is credited with converting the whole of Ireland to Christianity. He also used the shamrock as an illustration of the Holy Trinity. Legends also say that he drove the snakes out of Ireland.

Wearing green was originally thought to be unlucky, as Irish folklore says it is the faeries’ favorite color. As the celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day became more about Irish heritage, the color green became more and more popular to wear to honor Ireland as “The Emerald Isle.”

There is a tradition that you will get pinched for not wearing green on Saint Patrick’s Day.

A few staples of Irish cuisine is corned beef & cabbage with Irish soda bread. Corned beef has nothing to with corn, but refers to salt “corns” used to cure the beef. Corned beef used to be really expensive in Ireland, so it wasn’t widely popular. It wasn’t until Irish immigrants coming to the States found it more affordable in America that it became a popular staple in their cuisine.

Irish soda bread is a super easy to make recipe that only involves four ingredients: flour, buttermilk, salt, and baking soda. Check out this easy recipe!
