Don’t fool yourself. Today’s date is not March 1st, it’s February 29th or Leap Day. In honor of this odd day that only comes once every four years, here are a few leaps and things that leap!
2012 will have 366 days instead of the usual 365. Why? The Earth actually takes a little bit longer than 365 days to revolve around the Sun. 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds to be exact. This almost quarter of a day would set our calendars way off after awhile if it wasn’t accounted for by adding an extra day every 4 years. Thus, Leap Day was born and with it, a poem to mark its remembrance:
“Thirty days hath September,
April, June and November;
All the rest have thirty-one
Save February, she alone
Hath eight days and a score
Til leap year gives her one day more.”
