Another weekend is upon us and that means we need to find out what will be hitting theaters to entertain us. This week we have a Japanese animation film, Nic Cage as a flaming skull and Reese Witherspoon back on the big screen being adorable as always.
Our Queen of the Silver Screen, Julie Fisk, headed out to see an import from Japan this week. We’ll let the member of the DFW Film Critics Association take control of this one:
The Secret World of Arrietty:
“The Secret World of Arrietty” chronicles the adventures of the Clock Family, tiny people who live under the floorboards of home and borrow from the humans who live there.
This is the film adaptation of the popular book series “The Borrowers,” written by Mary Norton. It was already released to critical acclaim in Japan in 2010, but now it’s been dubbed in English for American audiences. Husband and wife team Will Arnett and Amy Poehler are some of the more recognizable voices, as well as Carol Burnett.
We follow Arrietty and her family of “Borrowers” as they search for food in a home and try to NOT be seen by its human inhabitants. Arrietty is discovered by a young boy who comes to live there and a potentially dangerous relationship develops.
The story here is pretty thin, but what sells this movie is the utter devotion to detail. The home Arrietty lives in is cleverly made of shoe-boxes and flower pots. The garden she travels through is sumptuous. Even the sound editing makes a huge impact. When Arrietty & her father sneak through the kitchen, the echoes turn it into a dark & treacherous cavern.
There are some inconsistencies in this story, like we never know exactly what happened to the Borrowers who lived in the house before the Clocks, but I’m still giving “The Secret World of Arrietty” a B+. While the movie itself might be a bit too gentle and slow moving for some, I do think the delicate love story that develops between Arrietty and her human friend will enchant little girls and obviously some grown women.
This Means War
We are really excited about this romantic action comedy with Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine & Tom Hardy. Pine and Hardy are the best two CIA agents the country has. They are also best friends. They also just found out they have been dating the same girl.
So what do two spies who just found out they are competing for the same girl do? Well of course they start spying on the other one and trying to ruin their chances with Witherspoon. This movie is like the full length action packed version of Spy vs. Spy from the old MAD Magazine.
We are calling a date night this weekend and heading to this one. It should provide everything for both men and women and is perfect for a nice night out of the house with your significant other.
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
Nic Cage reprises his role as the Cursed motorcycle rider who is filled with evil. Well now there is an opportunity to lift his curse, if he can stop a new evil from turning a young boy into the Anti-Christ.
We aren’t quite sure how this happened, the first Ghost Rider didn’t get any good reviews, but a second one, in 3D no less, has been made and will be in theaters this weekend. Enjoy…if you want to.
