As another weekend approaches Harry Potter is back in theaters, but not as Harry Potter and some whales need saving.
Our Queen of the Silver Screen, Julie Fisk, is a member of the DFW Film Critics Association and saw our first movie of the week.
Woman In Black
“The Woman in Black” stars Daniel Radcliffe as a lawyer traveling to a remote village, where the townspeople are terrorized by an angry ghost. I’ll be honest. The only reason I watched this movie was to see what Daniel Radcliff had chosen as his first post-Harry Potter film project. Sadly, I wasn’t impressed.
Daniel plays a lawyer sent to a creepy and isolated village to sort out the legal matters of an even creepier and MORE isolated estate. Along the way he discovers a murder mystery and a ghost who apparently can’t stand kids. This whole movie is just an excuse to have Daniel Radcliff stumble around a haunted house and say ridiculous things like, “No, I’ll just spend the night here.”
The haunted house itself is recycled from every haunted house movie made in the past 30 years, and so are the scares. Not that “The Woman in Black” doesn’t have its chilling moments. I watched quite a bit of it through my fingers. This will be a great movie to watch at home around Halloween, but is it worth the chunk of change you’ll pay at the theater? Not so much.
That’s why I’m giving “The Woman in Black” a C. Plus I really expected for more from Daniel Radcliffe. It seems like he’d have his pick of interesting movies after Harry Potter. Why did he end up in this rehashed ghost story? Next time, I hope he takes a bigger risk.
Daniel’s got a great sense of humor. He was hilarious on Saturday Night Live recently. Maybe he can work that into his next project. Certainly the man who played Casey Anthony’s DOG could pull of a comedy.
Chronicle, is a new film this week from 20th Century Fox directed by Josh Trank (The Kill Point) starring Michael Kelly (The Adjustment Bureau), Michael B. Jordan (Red Tails), and Dane DeHaan (In Treatment).
The film centers around a group of friends whose lives spin out of control while they develop incredible powers.
Three high school friends, Andrew, Matt, and Steve, are exploring in the woods when they come across a mysterious substance.
Soon after the strange discovery, they each begin developing a unique super power and find that the best way to hone their new skills is to play around with them together.
But as their personal lives get in the way, the very powers that brought them closer together may just be what inevitably destroys them.
Big Miracle, is a new movie from Universal Studios directed by Ken Kwapis (He’s Just Not That Into You) starring John Krasinski (The Office), Ted Danson (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation), and Drew Barrymore (Going The Distance).
The film centers around a group of Alaskans who band together to help save stranded whales.
A newsman Adam Carlson (John Krasinski) working in the northern tip of Alaska has just about run out of stories to report on when a family of endangered gray whales are trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Arctic Circle.
The news brings his ex-girlfriend, Greenpeace volunteer and avid environmentalist Rachel Kramer (Drew Barrymore) to the rescue. Her efforts help bring attention to the whales’ plight, not only from hordes of interested onlookers racing to the area, but from local politicians.
However, what Rachel and Adam need most of all is cooperation from both the American and Russian governments if the whales are to survive.
Based on the book “Freeing the Whales” by Tom Rose.
