The weekend is fast approaching and new movies are flying in from the studios and hitting theaters big this weekend. Everything from a classic redone in 3D to Meryl Streep as historical female English figure (Oscar) Margaret Thatcher to Mark Wahlberg trying to save his family in an action packed film.
Our Queen of the Silver Screen, Julie Fisk, is part of the DFW Film Critics Association and she saw a couple of the movies coming out this week. We’ll let her take it from here:
We have two historical films in theaters this weekend, starting with “Iron Lady” starring Meryl Streep as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
This movie finds Margaret Thatcher later in life, vacillating between lucidity and dementia. Important moments in her life are seen as flash-backs, which end when she comes crashing back to reality. There are so many interesting aspects to Margaret Thatcher’s life, so why did director Phyllida Lloyd decide to focus on her dementia? She takes this incredibly important political figure and diminishes her to a doddering old woman which frankly is insulting. Plus it makes for a boring movie. Not to say that “Iron Lady” isn’t pretty and OF COURSE Meryl Streep is wonderful. Her performance deserves a much better film though and it’s the only reason I’m giving “Iron Lady” a C+.
In the Land of Blood and Honey
Also out is Angelina Jolie’s writing & directorial debut, “In the Land of Blood and Honey” about a man & woman torn apart by the Bosnian war. A love story set against a back-drop of ethnic-cleansing. There are images in this movie that are so AWFUL I almost walked out of the theater. I’m glad I toughed it out though because the overall story is truly compelling. I’m so please with Angelina because given her vast resources she could’ve taken an easier route. Instead she chose to write a challenging war piece and to introduce us to some fantastic new talent. This movie isn’t perfect, but I’m giving “In the Land of Blood and Honey” a B and even better, I’m forgiving Angelina for “The Tourist.”
Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg) is a family man who made his life in the smuggling business but got out years ago to settle down with his wife (Kate Beckinsale). When his wife’s brother tries to start ‘running’ items and messes up Wahlberg’s character has to try to fix everything by getting back in the business.
Trying to protect his family will Wahlberg be able to please everyone or will he have to risk his life and that of his wife and kids in order to get out for good? The action packed thrill ride is right where we like to see Wahlberg. The cast is deep and solid and the story line is a slightly predictable, but you stay entertained.
This is a good movie if you like high paced films. Should be something of a high adrenaline date night type movie.
Beauty & The Beast 3D
Belle and the Beast are back in theaters in 3D this time. The same movie, nothing has changed, but if your kids are into this classic Disney film you should go see it.
