There are words that you probably say a lot and you don’t even know you are saying them wrong. We break down 10 of the ones that you might say “Ohh that’s how you say it.” Were not going to tell you, but Leigh Ann says at least one of these wrong; all the time.
So let’s see if you are properly saying the following words
Incorrect pronunciation: ath – a – leet
- Correct pronunciation: ath – leet
Alright people the Olympics are coming up in a few months so get working on this one. There is no ‘a’ between the ‘h’ & ‘l’ so please stop. It’s not De-cath-a-lon either…if you were wondering.
ESCAPE / ESPRESSO / ET CETERA
Incorrect pronunciation: ex – cape / ex – presso / ex – set – err – uh
Correct pronunciation: ess – cape / ess – presso / ett – set – err – uh
Three for one deal on this one but they’re all the same concept; stop adding an ‘x’ sound to words. If people wanted to have an ‘x’ in it they would have had an ‘x’ in it.
Incorrect pronunciation: nuke – you – lerr
Correct pronunciation: new – clee – err
We’ll just let the former President explain this one with a member of the press corp.
PRESCRIPTION / PREROGATIVE
Incorrect pronunciation: purr – scrip – shun / purr – ogg – uh – tiv
Correct pronunciation: pre – scrip – shun / pre – rogg – uh – tiv
We’ll be honest, Prerogative screwed us up thanks in a large part to Bobby Brown. Thanks Bobby.
Incorrect pronunciation: up – most
Correct pronunciation: utt – most
Let’s be honest, if you mispronounce this word you’re just not reading the word properly. Leigh Ann does say this correctly.
Incorrect pronunciation: can – uh – dett
Correct pronunciation: can – da – dett
This is a word we’re hearing all the time, especially when Kelly Clarkson endorses one.
Incorrect pronunciation: sherr – berrt
Correct pronunciation: sherr – bet
This one we caught Leigh Ann on numerous times. She likes “Rainbow Shur-bert” & “Orange Shur-bert” the best.
Incorrect pronunciation: aww – ree
Correct pronunciation: uh – rye
We’ll be honest we’ve never heard anyone mess this one up like that. If they do, maybe something went awry in their schooling. (See what I did there).
FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES
Incorrect pronunciation: “for all intensive purposes”
Correct pronunciation: “for all intents and purposes”
This is one that fires us up more than any of the other. We don’t know why. Maybe because we are communicators for a living, but it’s just wrong and bugs us, we’re not even going to talk about it anymore.
Incorrect pronunciation: off – ten
Correct pronunciation: off – en
I was often told I said this word wrong during high school Drama. I’ve since worked through the issue and now properly pronounce all the letters in the word. I feel good about this and would like to help anyone who might still have this problem.
Good luck and good diction (dik-shuhn).
