One of the 18 films submitted to the Academy for the animated features category didn’t make the cut. Among the films under review, those classic cartoon characters, “The Smurfs” were disqualified. That’s right, they got smurfed.

According to Reuters, the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch of the Academy approved three motion-capture films as well as green-lighting one live action/animation hybrid, “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” but there’s no love for “The Smurfs.”

The Academy’s rules regarding hybrid films state that “a significant number of major characters must be animated, and animation must figure in no loess that 75 percent of the picture’s running time.”

There are still 17 films in the running, so the animated feature category will still have a full plate of  five nominees. Had the Academy disqualified another film along with “The Smurfs,” the 16 films would have dropped the nominee slots down to four.
