Lite’s Review Room: Weekend Movies – “Sherlock Holmes” & “Alvin And The Chipmunks”
As Hollywood slowly runs out of original ideas it starts turning out sequals as fast as it possibly can. This weekend is no exception with two re-hashed characters hitting the box office. One for a second time and a group of little critters for the third straight Christmas.
Our Queen of the Silver Screen, Julie Fisk, saw the newest Sherlock Holmes:
Sherlock Holmes a Game of Shadows:
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows stars Robert Downey Jr. as the legendary detective who might have finally met his match. Fans of the first Sherlock Holmes movie will be happy to know that they’ll get lots more of the same from “A Game of Shadows.”
Jude Law’s Dr. John Watson rekindles his bromance with Holmes and they take off on another adventure. This time they’re tracking down criminal mastermind Professor James Moriarty because he’s…doing what…exactly?
[photogallerylink id=65440 align=left]That’s the biggest problem that I have with this latest Sherlock Holmes. It’s so frantic, it becomes hard to follow. Guy Ritchie is once again directing, and this time he’s added more artillery, more noise and many more slow motion action sequences. That paired with the machine-gun pratter between Holmes and pretty much everyone else makes the movie feel manic. Plus, the story gets lost in all the twist & turns. More than once I found myself thinking, “What? Who was that guy? Where are they going now?”
Robert Downey Jr. fans should also be warned that he is bloodied, bruised and partially bearded through the whole movie. Not quite the gorgeous guy we’re use to, but he does bring a sense of humor to Holmes that makes the movie worth watching.
I’m giving “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” a B- because despite being overzealous with explosions and way too chatty, it’s still a ton of fun. And if you get caught up in silly little things like a plot or continuity, just eat your popcorn & know that another stylized action sequence is coming up really soon.
