This December we’re carrying on our look at Christmas classics, the songs that no festive soundtrack should be without. Now, it’s the turn of the heartfelt festive staple “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.”
First recorded in 1944 by Judy Garland, today Last.fm Trends looks at how the tale of enduring togetherness is faring via its scrobbles.
Originally recorded by Garland as part of the musical Meet Me In St. Louis, the 1957 version by Frank Sinatra (with rewritten lyrics) is the most well-known, with 293,975 scrobbles from 111,989 listeners to date. It also contributes to a seasonal spike in his listeners shown below: in common with Elvis Presley and Mariah Carey.
Of course, its appeal to listeners has gone in tandem with its appeal to musicians: Judy Garland’s version is the second most popular on Last.fm with 87,250 listeners, but it’s also been covered more recently by Christina Aguilera (46,495 listeners), Coldplay (32,852 listeners) and She & Him (15,819 listeners). With artists ranging from indie to jazz or rnb, it’s up to you what your merry little Christmas sounds like.
