What’s the frequency, Kenneth?! [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]REM[/lastfm] has announced that they are splitting after 31 years in the music business. It’s not the end of the world as we know it, but to some fans, it definitely feels like it.
REM fans feel like they are losing their religion with news of the break up. Here is what the band had to say on their website:
“To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.” R.E.M.
They are one of those bands that defined a generation through the 80s and 90s. Many of REM’s songs have become classics, and while we don’t quite know all the lyrics to It’s The End Of The World As We Know It, we still enthusiastically shout “Leonard Bernstein” when it comes up.
Have a look at their website announcement, and then stand in the place where you are, have an orange crush, and smile at the memories like a shiny, happy person.
