Kate Winslet is a real life hero. She was vacationing with her two children and boyfriend on billionaire Richard Branson’s private island in the British Virgin Islands when a fire broke out in the Great House. Tropcial Storm Irene, packing 90 mph winds and lightning, blew in around 4am, a bolt of lightning struck the house igniting the fire. The Titanic actress sprang into action to help get people out of the inferno.
There were 20 people staying in Branson’s Great House on Necker Island. Kate Winslet was there with her 10-year old daughter, 7-year old son, and her boyfriend as well as Richard Branson’s mother, Eve, and daughter, Holly.
“My mother’s 90 years old and, in order — although she can walk — in order to speed the process up, [Kate Winslet] picked my mother up and carried her, carried her out of the house, and so Kate helped rescue my mother,” Branson said.
Only the Great House was damaged in the blaze. Branson lost an office and thousands of pictures. Everyone staying in the eight-bedroom home escaped with no injuries.
Necker Island is where Nick Lachey and Vanessa Manillo were married in July, and Holly Branson is also planning to be married there later this year.
