‘Weird Al’ Debuts Right Behind Gaga
[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]“Weird Al” Yankovic[/lastfm] has been parodying songs for almost 30 years and has reached a new milestone in regards to the Billboard charts. And he is staring down the woman who helped him get there.
The song stylist who takes his cues from what is hot in the world of music has used [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lady Gaga[/lastfm]‘s most recent hit ‘Born This Way’ and his parody of it, ‘Perform This Way’ to debut his album ‘ALpocalypse’ at #9 on the Billboard 200.
Weird Al has plenty of experience parodying the songs of Diva’s who create controversy with their outfits and live shows getting started with [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Madonna[/lastfm]‘s ‘Like a Virgin’ parody ‘Like a Surgeon’.
Gaga and the Internet has helped Weird Al to his highest ever debut on the Billboard 200. His previous best was Straight Out of Lynwood which debuted at #10.
The funny thing about ‘ALpocalypse’ is it wasn’t going to have ‘Perform This Way’ on the album. Weird Al said this on April 21st in a post on his blog:
“I wrote and recorded what I thought was going to be the first single off of my new album: a parody of “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga called “Perform This Way.” But after hearing it, Lady Gaga decided not to give me permission to release the song, so… it won’t be coming out commercially anytime in the near future. Sorry.” That is the short version at the time before the song was released. (Check out the long form of the story).
After that Weird Al posted the recorded version with lyrics on YouTube, it got enough media and fan support that Lady Gaga backed off her stance and now ‘ALpocalypse’ is racing up the charts with “Perform This Way” to thank.
Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ album currently sits at #8 on the Billboard 200 after falling from #4 last week.
