James Durbin, a 21-year-old father from Santa Cruz, CA, along with fellow contestant Emily Anne Reed, supplied the show with the requisite sob story factor. 

But ironically, in addition to the tragic tales, they were both compelling performers, particularly Durbin. 

But when it comes to Durbin, are we in for another season of octave breaking vocal pyrotechnics ala [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Adam Lambert[/lastfm]?

While Lambert didn’t have the heart breaking background story (that was left to Season 8′s [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Danny Gokey[/lastfm]), there are a lot of vocal similarities between Lambert and Durbin. Both contestants also happened to have their auditions take place in San Francisco.

Durbin, who lost his musician father to a drug overdose when Durbin was 9, has also lived his life coping with Tourrettes and Asperger’s Syndrome.   But somehow, he seems to shake any trace of that when he sings. Take a look at last night’s incredibly emotional audition.
